What are the fantasy implications for the Chiefs now that they have traded this year's second round pick – and a conditional pick in 2014 – to the 49ers for the services of Alex Smith? Discuss in the forums!

rapacious price – much more than they had to pay but perhaps justifiable. they could have got Smitty for a 3rd or 4th if they'd waited til draft day, but that would be six wks of structuring & planning lost to the new regime of a team that is otherwise ready to be competitive.
i picked JCharles @ 1.05 in Fanatics because i knew Reid wouldnt let that offense go any further without a reasonably competent QB & that's all Jamaal needs to challenge for best small back of all time. I expect a CJ2K'09 type of season from him if they draft OL and either resign Albert or add a decent WR2. Smith will never be more than a midlevel QB2, but i think he's got the dontfuckitupness part of the job down now.

I think Smith is going to be a great Fit with Andy… but I think any QB looks good with Andy… this will give KC a shot in every game they play this year
Wikki… i think you like more than O in KC this year as you grabbed there D.. .is that your only D??

yeah, i got sniped a coupla times with Ds & dont believe in reaching because the difference between the middling ones is negligible & unquantifiable now that defenses only stop bad teams anymore. a little research after i got sniped on AZ showed that KC plays half their '13 games against bad offenses, the highest left. plus, the whole Chiefs team has suffered unto the bad QBing which has so often left them running uphill. Love DJ, Hali, Berry & they have $$ to spend on at least one more DB. i was going to give Buf a chance as my 2nd D in the last rd but couldnt leave Jarius Wright on the board

I agree that KC could have waited, but I don't think the Niners sold them a bill of goods, either. There were rumblings that Arizona was going to get in to the mix, and although I don't think they would have traded Smith within the division, if the Cardinals came at them with some insane deal, they would have to have taken it. So, the Chiefs proposed a very fair and competitive offer, and it forces the other QB needy teams to look elsewhere, if they were planning on submitting a deal for Smith. It's a fair deal for both sides.
It's obvious that there are no home-run hitters at QB in this year's draft. You won't find a better rookie in round 2 that is better than Smith, and he is better than most of the QBs in the bottom half of the league. It's a nice way for Reid to hit the ground running. Plus, if Reid can make Kevin Kolb look good, I'm sure Smith is in good hands.
As far as fantasy implications, Wikkid is right that a competent QB will make Charles much better, and worthy of that early round pick. (I thought for sure you were taking Martin or Morris.) The key here I think will be making sure the O-Line stays in tact, and re-signing Bowe or at least Franchising him. Bowe has Vernon Davis like size, so if he can get on the same page with Alex, he would make for a solid fantasy WR2 capable of WR1 numbers some weeks. Alex is a fan of the check-down so Moeaki could finally be that sleeper TE everyone has predicted him to be the past couple of seasons.
For the Niners, they now possess Patriot-like mobility for the draft and can move around or trade picks for free agents. The jets could sure use those draft picks and Revis in the Niner backfield makes an already scary defense downright deadly.
Just my .02.

a sharp GM would realize that AZ never would have been a serious player for AS because Arias has the most vertical pass game this side of Al Davis's undead corpse & Smitty dont go there. as i said, SF was going to wait unless the price was high enough for them not to, but it was worth it to Reid to be settled @ QB now.
back to Arias – the stone nachul thang out there for him @ QB is the kid Reid didnt trade for. if he can keep the Phoenix phaithphul from stoning him to death for the Cards trading for yet another Iggles castaway, bringing the Foles rifle back to Arizona looks like Kismet to me.
the Niners GM office looks to be as savvy as its coaching staff. informed sources say they started the "trade set in place" rumor so Reid, who had NOT settled on a deal, would pay their price. Revis is a perfect fit, but SF wont pay the NYJ price for a rental and wont pay Revis more than $12mil a season on an extension. its a lot harder to add a star when youre already a contender because sooner or later the guys that got you to the top are going wanna get paid for it and adding a big salary before that can cause a Jetlike crumble of cap structure. the downside to a savvy GM is that he may be too smart to do what everyone wants him to do. nufced

Glad for Smith to be wanted and to go to a good QB coach. I think that he would have had a rough go of it in ARZ with that o-line. The Chiefs should try to make Bowe happy and draft for their lines.
